A Louis XV Style Marquetry Inlaid Gueridon By Emmanuel Zwiener
A Louis XV Style Marquetry Inlaid Gueridon By Emmanuel Zwiener
This gueridon or occasional table has a green marble top. The frieze has marquetry flowering branches. The angles are set with gilt-bronze rocaille clasps heading the legs. They are finely sculpted with a shell above trailing flowers. Each side has a leafy apron mount. The delicate cabriole legs terminate in scrolled sabots. Incised mark ‘Z J’ to reverse of apron mounts. France, Circa 1890. This beautifully made gueridon is characteristic of Zwiener’s Parisian production. The shell corner clasps are a model that Zwiener is known to have employed. They show the design influence of the sculptor Léon Messagé who collaborated with Zwiener, bringing his distinctive Art Nouveau infused Louis XV style.
